The historic charm of the Dornoch Gondola is coming to life in bold, vibrant colors as local artists embark on a creative journey to celebrate its legacy. Murals inspired by the gondola's rich history are being painted across Dornoch, transforming blank walls into captivating tributes to the past.
A Tribute Through Art
Leading the effort is celebrated local artist Fiona MacLean, whose work is known for blending contemporary styles with Highland traditions. Her mural, located on the wall of the old station house near the Meadows, features an intricate depiction of the original “Double Zero” gondola in mid-flight, surrounded by the breathtaking landscape of the Scottish Highlands.
“These murals aren’t just art; they’re storytelling,” says Fiona. “We’re connecting the community with the gondola’s history and showing how it shaped Dornoch’s identity.”
Community-Driven Creativity
This initiative has been made possible through generous community grants, reflecting the collective pride and enthusiasm for the gondola project. Local businesses and residents have also pitched in, donating supplies and offering wall space for the murals.
Among the highlights are:
A mural at the town square depicting workers constructing the original gondola system in 1812.
An interactive painting at the children’s park, allowing visitors to “step into” a gondola cabin for the perfect photo opportunity.
A timeline mural along the main walkway, charting the gondola's history from its inception to its tragic fire in 1882 and its modern restoration.
Art Meets Heritage
The project is not only a visual treat but also an educational experience. Each mural is accompanied by QR codes that link to detailed stories, historical photos, and project updates, encouraging both locals and tourists to delve deeper into Dornoch's gondola heritage.

“The gondola was about connecting people and places,” Fiona adds. “These murals are doing the same, in a way that’s fresh and meaningful for today.”
